Short answer
A Saudi border number and an Iqama number are different identifiers. The border number is recorded in the Jawazat system and can be queried through the official Absher border-number service. An Iqama number identifies a residence permit record. Use the identifier requested by the live Saudi service or employer workflow; do not substitute one for the other.
What the two numbers identify
The official Absher Query for Border Number service describes the border number as the number registered in the Jawazat or passports system. It is not the same as an Iqama (residence permit) number, a visa number, or a passport number.
An Iqama number belongs to the residence-permit record after that document has been issued. A passport number belongs to the passport itself. A visa number belongs to the visa record. These identifiers can appear together in a recruitment or employment file, but they answer different government-system questions.
Where Saudi services use a border number
Absher provides a public query service for the border number. The service page currently asks the visitor to select the relevant inquiry type and follow the live fields. Because government forms can change, use the fields shown on the official page instead of relying on screenshots or an old checklist.
For employer-side checks, the Saudi Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development explains that its inquiry about an expatriate employee can use a border number, residence-permit number, passport number, and nationality. That is an employer workflow; it does not turn the border number into an Iqama number.
Which identifier should you enter?
- Checking the border number: use the official Absher Query for Border Number service and follow its current inquiry fields.
- Checking an expatriate employee for an establishment: use the identifier requested by the HRSD or Qiwa workflow, together with the required nationality and record details.
- Checking a residence permit: enter the Iqama number when the service specifically asks for the residence-permit number.
- Checking a visa or passport record: use the visa or passport number requested by that service. Do not replace it with a border number.
Document checks before a recruitment or visa step
Keep the passport, entry record, visa paperwork, employer documents, and any Iqama or border-number record together. Check spelling, nationality, and each number character by character. If a number is missing or a record does not match, preserve the reference and the date you checked it, then ask the responsible employer or authorized government channel to review the record.

If the numbers do not match
Do not retry a form with a different identifier just to obtain a result. A mismatch may reflect a data-entry error, a record that has not been updated, or a service that requires another identifier. Keep the official response or reference, avoid sharing identity documents in public messages, and contact the responsible employer or authorized channel.
